The Top Ten Money-Making Stars of 2003 (according to USA Today, via Quigley Publishing Co., which conducts an annual survey of motion picture exhibitors)are (in order): Jim Carrey, Nicole Kidman, Jack Nicholson, Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts, Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe, Tom Hanks, Will Ferrell and Renee Zellweger. In 2003, I believe I contributed to the wealth of Carrey (Bruce Almighty), Nicholson (Anger Management), Cruise (The Last Samurai), Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean), Hanks (Catch Me If You Can – released in Dec. of 2002 but I saw it in January, I think, so it counts), and Renee Zellweger (both Chicago and Down With Love). The two “stars to watch” for the next year also earned a little from me: Ashton Kutcher (Cheaper by the Dozen) and Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation).
Woo-hoo, who will it be for 2004? Johnny Depp has about 4 movies coming out next year, so I’m guessing he has a chance at still being on the list (this was his first year in the top ten, just like Ferrell and Zellweger)… I think Will Ferrell might fall out, particularly if Leonardo DiCaprio’s two films (The Aviator and The Good Shepherd) or Brad Pitt’s 3 (Troy, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Ocean’s Twelve) do well… but what do I know? It’s just fun to guess.
