SAG awards

I continue to strive to be the source for all movie awards show news, or something. The Screen Actors Guild announced nominees for their tenth annual awards. Apparently, the focus this year is on “smaller” films, according to the Hollywood Reporter story. There’s some evidence of this (the article notes that Patricia Clarkson was elevated to Best Actress instead of supporting, as she’s been nominated elsewhere, (uh, Golden Globes, I think) for The Station Agent, as well as getting a supporting nod for thirteen). Mostly, it’s the *absence* of certain larger films that makes the presence of “smaller” films seem obvious. The Station Agent and Mystic River tied with six nominations apiece; “larger” films that are expected to show well at the Oscars (think Cold Mountain and Master and Commander) received basically no notice (Renee Zellweger is up for Best Supporting Actress).

I am now more convinced than ever that I need to see The Station Agent pronto… but of course, it moved out of the one theater in KC that was showing it TODAY. Grrr.

I did like it. Burton does creepy-dreamy better than anyone I can think of, though, and I found most of the flashback scenes to be a perfect mix of this-couldn’t-happen and that-is-sooooo-cool. I’m a sucker for Ewan McGregor, though – one of the few people who I love *more* with a false accent. Daffodils everywhere! And popcorn hanging in the air! And he could just leave his hat hanging in the house! And on and on.
