WGA Screenplay Noms Announced
Even split between major studio and indie fare
Hollywood writers opted for an eclectic mix of nominees for the top WGA screenplay honors, opting for independent art-house films in the original screenplays and mostly high-profile releases in the adapted category.
Nominees in the original category went to Gurinder Chadha, Paul Mayeda Berges and Guljit Bindra for Fox Searchlight’s “Bend It Like Beckham;” Steven Knight for Miramax’s “Dirty Pretty Things;” Jim Sheridan & Naomi Sheridan & Kirsten Sheridan for Fox Searchlight’s “In America;” Sofia Coppola for Focus’s “Lost in Translation;” and Tom McCarthy for Miramax’s “The Station Agent.”
Nominees for the adapted category: Robert Pulcini & Shari Springer Berman for Fine Line’s “American Splendor;” Anthony Minghella for Miramax’s “Cold Mountain;” Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson for New Line’s “Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King;” Brian Helgeland for Warner’s “Mystic River;” and Gary Ross for Universal’s “Seabiscuit.”
