Hey, finally, a little bit of book news. I read Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman and The Summons by John Grisham over the weekend. I am waaaay behind in reading but I always hope that summer will improve that (though maybe not, if I’m in Italy). I really enjoyed Practical Magic — it was almost nothing like the movie, though I did end up picturing Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as the main characters. It was a good book for me to read at this time, too, because it reminded me of a few things – the intensity of the characters’ feelings was, well, a little bit instructive. And the language was lovely. My books page has been updated to reflect all of this.
Grisham, of course, remains the “literary equivalent to crack cocaine,” (thanks to Richard from “Caroline in the City”). Couldn’t put it down, but that was a nice change.
Tonight I had the group meeting, and spent faaaar too much time at the library in the company of this kid I just want to kill. Then, somewhat happily, I went to get a bite with two other people from my group, and that was fun and unexpectedly sociable of me. Woo-hoo.
New Daily Show tonight. I give it a 3.5/5 – funny, but not heart-stoppingly funny (though I did laugh out loud at least once).

I like Alice Hoffman a lot, especially The River King.
I haven’t read anything else by Alice Hoffman yet, but I found a copy of Here on Earth lurking on my bookshelf tonight, so I think that will be my next read. Have you read anything else/do you have recommendations?

No, I’ve always meant to check out some of her other books and haven’t managed it yet. I’ll be interested to hear about Here on Earth.
I’m not sure that I even knew about the existence of a Practical Magic book (although I’ve heard about the new planned television series). Maybe I’ll check that out.

Heh! I’d forgotten about that. Usually anymore when I think of TV references, I think of how Michael on Now and Again loved Grisham and repeatedly asked for more of his — and any other — books. Anyway, I probably mentioned this in one of my previous mini-tirades, but I didn’t end up enjoying The Summons much. Still, I’m hoping the newest Grisham release will please me more since it goes back to the setting of A Time to Kill.

The Summons wasn’t my favorite Grisham, either — I missed the actual “legal thriller” part of it, I think. I may need to catch up on the few that I’ve missed recently. I don’t know if I’m remembering this correctly or not, but did you like Runaway Jury?

Yes, I liked it quite a bit. It’s one of the only books — or possibly just the only — among his more recent publications that I’ve truly enjoyed. (The movie version was decent, too. ::shrugs::)
