As we all may know, I “read” the Lawrence Journal World everyday, looking for stories that in any way mention the University of Kansas so I can clip them and put them into the big database of, well, clips about KU. Today on the front page there was this gem of a story: “Students cool to return of draft.” Now, all issues about the draft and the idiocy of Chuck Hagel, I did enjoy this quote:
“I would most definitely be a conscientious objector,” said Dan Smith, a 16-year-old sophomore at Free State High School, 4700 Overland Drive. “I’m either gay or going to Canada.”
What I wonder is this: Does he know he doesn’t have to be all three? I mean, sure, being gay, moving to Canada, and declaring himself a conscientious objector will definitely get him out of the service — not to mention the fact that he’s 16 — but it does seem a bit like overkill. Or is this some kind of identity crisis? I’m either gay or going to Canada. I’m pretty sure the two aren’t mutually exclusive, but I’ll admit, I’m just taking the word of others on that point.
