Good-night, Peter Jennings

I must say, even knowing what I do of lung cancer, I am very, very surprised: “Peter Jennings, Urbane News Anchor, Dies at 67.” He really was very good at his job.

The New York Times gets it just right with this:

For more than two decades, the magnitude of a news event could be measured, at least in part, by whether Mr. Jennings and his counterparts on the other two networks showed up on the scene. Indeed, they logged so many miles over so many years in so many trench coats and flak jackets that they effectively acted as bookends on some of the biggest running stories of modern times.

Somehow, I don’t think I’d even heard that he was ill, so I was rather surprised to come across news of this in my Columbus Dispatch e-mail digest today. It’s quite a loss, especially for the journalism world.
